Strategy Analytics: Samsung largest smartphone vendor

According to a new report by researchers at Strategy Analytics, Samsung is now the largest smart phone vendor worldwide, while other researchers still see Apple in the lead. Strategy Analytics also says that Samsung and Apple capture more than half of global shipments. Furthermore, the overall market is 41% larger than a year ago.

Apple: WWDC 2012 starts June 11th, sold out in a flash

Apple's annual World Wide Developers Conference takes place June 11 to 15 in San Francisco, CA. Don't start packing your bags yet, the event sold out within 2 hours. The lucky attendees will enjoy over 100 sessions and find over 1000 Apple engineers to chatter about iOS development. But do not despair, the session videos will be available online for registered Apple developers. Despite the price of $1600 per ticket, the conference sold out lightning fast. However, those bucks are just a drop in the ocean of Apple's $39.2 billion revenue in the last quarter.

Galaxy Nexus sold directly via Google Play

The reference Android developer phone, the Galaxy Nexus is now sold via Google Play in the US. Users can buy the device from Google directly, not having to go through an operator or reseller. There is a new devices section inside Google Play where the device can be obtained, unlocked, without any contract commitment. The device ships for $399 and comes with Google Wallet pre-installed.

Xcode 4.4 Developer Preview available

The third developer preview of Mac OS X Mountain Lion has Xcode 4.4 in the trunk. The current version is available to developers signed up for the Apple developer program. The iOS app development suite packs a few new features like an updated LLVM Compiler, improved support for the 2011 C++ standard, among others. It can be downloaded over the Mac Dev Center.

Trend Micro conducted a study on the security of mobile operating systems. The focus was on usage in the enterprise context. The results showed Blackberry ahead of Apple by far, Windows Phone came in third and Android proved to be the least secure in this list of four. The main reason for the low position was Android's slow update situation and the resulting inability to quickly fix vulnerabilities.

Austria: A1 introduces payment with paybox NFC

A1, the Austrian operator within the Telekom Austria Group, has introduced an NFC payment service. Austrian customers will be able to pay for anything up to 25€ by holding their NFC phone close to a payment terminal - for now at Merkur supermarkets and McDonald's restaurants. The number of NFC-enabled phones in Austria is expected to hit 200,000 by the end of the year.

This time we thought our member Aleš Rosina deserved a mention, since his entry to the Lumia 800 giveaway was quite interesting. Ales talked about handling error reports and we decided to have a look how it worked in his "Ljubljana Bus" app. Unfortunately we could not get the app to crash, but found it interesting nonetheless.

Gartner: 98% tablet sales increase from 2011 to 2012

A new Gartner study assumes that tablet sales will nearly double in 2012, as compared to 2011. 118.9 million units are to be sold worldwide this year according to the analysts. Android is already an important competitor in the iPhone-dominated market. Microsoft and RIM will need a few years to acquire a mentionable market share, Gartner says.
